Return to Book Page. A Bucket of Sunshine , a term used for the use of a nuclear bomb, is a firsthand insight into life in the mids on a Royal Air Force Canberra nuclear-armed squadron in West Germany on the frontline in the Cold War. Brooke uses many amusing overtones to tell his story of what was an extremely serious business when the world was standing on the brink of nuclear conflict.

The English-Electric Canberra was a first generation, jet-powered light bomber manufactured in large numbers in the s. The Canberra could fly at a higher altitude than any other bomber through the s and due to its ability to evade early interceptors was a popular export product and served with many nations.

Jun 01, Robert Hepple rated it really liked it. For most of this period he was a Canberra B I 8 pilot based in Germany, and the 'Bucket of Sunshine' referred to in the title is the colloquial name for the tactical nukes carried by some aircraft of the unit.

Pretty serious stuff except that a lot of the book is about what the crews actually got up to most of the time when they weren't learning how to use weapon systems.

Like things involving the mascot parrot, or accidentally dropping suitcases loaded in the bomb-bay, and other such anecdotes. Brooke gets a few detailed a bit muddled, so don't expect a technical details book - just enjoy the background of life in a Canberra Squadron at the height of the Cold War.

Dec 26, John rated it it was amazing. View 1 comment. Mar 24, Roy Szweda rated it really liked it Shelves: planes. A warts and all personal account of the Cold War frontline in RAF Germany: an excellent if very personal account of a bygone era of British military aviation and hopefully the first in a series. The book is easy going and combines facts and opinions in a light, often amusing way.
